cultivating youth

Nutrition Education

Currently, Cultivating Youth teaches in-school nutrition and gardening classes at West Seattle Elementary, in the Seattle School District.  From October through February students in the 2nd through 5th grades come to our class once a week with their classroom teacher.  In the spring, K-2 students participate in our classes.

Cultivating Youth also partners with four afterschool programs - First Place School, Powerful Schools at John Muir Elementary, the Vietnamese Friendship Association at New Holly, and Rainier Vista's Youth Tutoring Program.

Our Spring 2008 class schedule is below.  West Seattle Elementary classes go until June.  Spring break is March 31st through April 4th and there will be no classes during that week.

Family Events

In the coming months, we will be working with our partners at New Holly, Rainier Vista, and High Point/West Seattle Elementary to create a number of evening and weekend family oriented cooking and nutrition events.

In April, we will be partnering with multiple service providers at New Holly to hold a Family/Parent night introducing parents to the youth-oriented services available at New Holly.

Intergenerational Programming

We will also be piloting a new program at Rainier Vista focusing on intergenerational connections, dialog, and learning.  Youth will have the opportunity to work with elders in their community in the classroom and garden.
