SCHOOL PROGRAM

IMG_7684 2.HEIC

Our after school program is geared towards 8-12 year olds. We operate after school Monday - Thursday from 4:00pm - 6:30pm. Students complete homework/studying with Tulane University students on-site (if needed), actively work with mentors, participate in physical fitness activities or athletic training and will receive a free meal daily. Although education is important in our program, students that need extensive academic assistance should not use our program as an alternative to getting specialized assistance.

ā€‹

Our mentoring program is geared towards 13-18 year old youth. We require a check-in, at minimum, twice a week with mentors to provide updates on their improvement plans that are curated to their specific needs and or to participate in enrichment activities.

Youth Development

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Employment: Because our program is centered around physical activity and athletic training, we hire student athletes on collegiate and high school levels to teach and mentor our youth.

ā€‹

Career Development: We place youth with professionals to experience their career interest hands-on.

ā€‹

Education: We provide tutoring two to three times a week with our collegiate student tutors. The youth can do routine homework, get tutoring on a specific subject, help with projects and assignments.

Cooking Lessons: We have a chef that does cooking lessons weekly with our youth. She teach quick, healthy meals and snacks that the youth can prepare with little money and little to no assistance.

Art: We have an art teacher that comes in weekly to teach different techniques while mentoring and allows our youth to express themselves artistically.

Technology: We take weekly library trips to ensure that each child has a library card and also allow them to utilize the computers for research and development. If there are no school needs that requires library use, we teach them to research the careers/subjects that interest them and to learn as much as they can.

Mentors: Our mentors are selected based on their lived experiences and teach the youth conflict resolution, boundaries and respect through effective communication.

Social Worker: We have a licensed clinical social worker that we partner with to deal with traumatic experiences.

Transportation: We transport our youth and families to and from events and programming.

PARENT SUPPORT

Parent Support

Nutrition: Offer parent workshops that education parents on the value of the nutrition and the importance on what we feed our body and how it effects the development of our youth.

ā€‹

Cooking Lessons: Personal chef does cooking workshops with parents. Teach quick, healthy meals and snacks that the youth can prepare with little money and little to no assistance.

ā€‹

Education: Require reports on their child's academic, behavior and social progress. Where there is an academic struggle, we provide assistance and a behavior issue, we provide mentoring and an improvement plan.

ā€‹

Emergency Response: Provide crisis counseling and emotional support.

ā€‹

Advocacy: Help parents advocate for their families in medical, social, educational spaces.

ā€‹

Legal: Partner with the organization Voices of the Experienced (VOTE) to help parents understand their rights, exercise their right to vote and amend laws.

ā€‹

Parent/Child Relationship: Get insight on the struggles of parenting from the perspective of the child and parent. Work to build, restore and improve relationship. Advocate on behave of the child where they feel unheard and unseen.

Program Input: The expectation is that parents and Cultivating Youth work together to care for the youth the program serves. Parents are asked input on the needs of the youth which helps shape the curriculum of the program.

ā€‹
